Over the past decades, the Explorer – and its longest running model the 1016 – has risen with the popularity of vintage watches to become a sought-after cornerstone of collections everywhere.
As the 1016s were discontinued different service dials were made because, presumably, the original dial variations were not longer available. There appear to be three “standard” dials that were also used as service dials and one “service only” dial variant.Gilt Dials. The term “gilt” or “gilt/gloss” refers to dials that were created by a galvanic coating process and appears on the 1016 until ~1967. Galvanization generally refers to a method of coating metals with another substance through a chemical reaction that binds them together.The Type 6 dial is the most common gilt 1016. While this and the Type 5 dials start in the 10xxxxx range, the Type 6 is the latest gilt dial produced so I have designated it as the final “mark.”Matte Dials. While there has never been an official statement of why Rolex moved from gilt to matte dials in the latter half of the 1960’s, the latter seems to exude the ‘tool watch’ vibe that Rolex aspired to inspire — while (likely) keeping production costs low.
