I was just comparing two of my vintage watches: Rolex 6564 & Gruen 23 precision powerdate. What they have in common: -To the untrained eye, these two watches have lots in common, similar dial colors, hands, etc. -The case size and metal also appear to be very close. What is different:The 1918 Gruen design is exactly the same design as the "Hermetic" case supplied to Rolex and others under a 1921 Swiss patent number CH 89276 registered by Jean Finger. A comparison of the two patents can be seen in the picture, and you can see how similar they are.These 877s are especially prized by collectors because they were also sold to Rolex and used in that company’s prized “Prince” models. For many years, collectors thought the caliber 877 was the first and only joint project of Gruen/Aegler/Rolex.
Unlike Rolex and any other brand known for its vintage timepieces, Gruen is also more reasonable in terms of pricing. It should be kept in mind that prices still depend on the quality, structure, and materials used in the watch. The Gruen Curvex Lieutenant has a beautifully curved case that would work well for a host of high-end Swiss brands. It’s simple and highly streamlined.
